American Cancer Society States New Position on Benefit of E-cigarettes

New ACS Position Statement (Our Thoughts)

The American Cancer Society is well known for their advocacy and commitment to eliminate cancer. As of February 2018, they’ve officially claimed a new stance on the benefit of e-cigarettes compared to traditional smoking. The statement includes the use of e-cigarettes to aid in quitting smoking all-together (thus, reducing cancer). Yay, right?!? We hope this is a step towards viewing vaping as a way to help quit smoking and save lives. Although, we have some lingering doubts. This fresh statement is laced with inconsistency. ACS continues to encourage the creation/enforcement of policy-making that is detrimental to the vaping industry.

ACS’s new position statement on the benefit of e-cigarettes.

Stefan Didak breaks down the statement well in this article on Not Blowing Smoke.

Quotes from ACS Position Statement (Statements Leaning in a Positive Direction)

“Combustible tobacco products, primarily cigarettes, are the single greatest cause of cancer and kill about 7 million people worldwide each year.”

“In the United States, 98% of all tobacco-related deaths are caused by cigarette smoking.”

“Based on currently available evidence, using current generation e-cigarettes is less harmful than smoking cigarettes, but the health effects of long-term use are not known.”

Quotes from Not Blowing Smoke Article (Solid Points to Acknowledge)

“Unless in the coming weeks and in upcoming flavor ban hearings ACS suddenly changes its position in support of these terrible ordinances we would have to call the change in position weak and disingenuous. Similarly, we do not believe ACS will stop funding and engaging in efforts to curb the sale, use, and availability of electronic cigarettes.”

“[The ACS Position Statement] does not specifically mention reducing the appeal of tobacco products for minors but in general. Wouldn’t you want safer, smoke-free alternatives to be more appealing to those trying to quit smoking? Or at the very least encourage their use versus making great efforts to restrict availability and access?”

“[Based on their new position statement,] you could easily argue that ACS will support your quit attempts using e-cigarettes while they ensure they are taxed to the point of industry destruction, only available to those 21 years or over, are only available in tobacco flavors, and may require you to go through extreme lengths to obtain one.”
